Easton in Gordano sometimes shortened to "E-I-G" is a
village in the
North Somerset unitary authority in
England. In 1991 the population was 2,761.
Location
It is situated at the north-eastern end of the
Gordano valley, on the south bank of the
Avon, opposite
Shirehampton, adjacent to the village of
Pill and commands an extensive view over the
Bristol Channel.
South Wales and
Royal Portbury Dock are also clearly visible. Part of the Dock is within the parish.
History
In early records
Easton in Gordano was known as Estone but for many centuries the village has also been known as
St. George. It was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1085.
After the
Second World War a housing development grew up in the lodway area and there are many residential homes there now.
Between 1974 and 1999 the parish was in the now abolished County of Avon.
Church
The village church is dedicated to
St. George, and was rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1872. The registers date from 1559.
The date of the first Church on this site is unknown, but records exist dating back to 1239.
It has been designated by
English Heritage as a grade II*
listed building.
Current
It is commonly used as a place for
commuting to
Bristol as it has excellent transport links being close to the
M5 and
Bristol. It is also close to the
Gordano Services on the
M5.
It is a sought after location due to its quiet and tranquility albeit you can hear traffic on the
M5 in parts of the village.
Facilities
There aren't many facilities in Easton-in-Gordano other than the
church and the church hall with its scout hut behind.
There is a playgroup run in the village hall and it can hired out for other activities.
A local cricket club exists and a football club called "St. George Easton in Gordano AFC" which was founded in 1917.
The main facilities are in the village of
Pill or alternatively just a few miles away in
Portishead.
Pubs
There are two pubs - the Kings Arms and the Rudgleigh Inn.
The Rudgleigh Inn is located on the main
A369 Portishead to Bristol Road.
The Kings Arms is located in the village on St. Georges Hill.
It is also home to three local
skittles teams and as such there's a skittle alley as an annex to the pub.
Doctors
There is a doctors' surgery on the
Pill/
Easton in Gordano Boundary at Lodway Close.
Transport
Easton in Gordano is well served by roads given the nearby M5 and A369 which links to Bristol and Portishead.
Also a bus route from Portishead to Bristol City Centre runs through the village.
Local Newspapers
The local
Clevedon Mercury and
Portishead Times newspapers are delivered to residents free of charge usually by Saturday morning.
Famous Anecdotes
Easton in Gordano is the birthplace of the explorer
Bertram Thomas.
It is celebrated in the
song
of the same name, by
The Wurzels.
